Rhyl’s Marine Lake will soon be empty. It’s the only saltwater lake in North Wales, and it needs its regular service.

The council asks for cooperation from the many watersports clubs that use the lake, although swimming is not currently allowed there.

They will start draining it February 24, and it will stay empty for a week. This allows for inspections, upkeep, and litter collection.

Refilling starts March 3, after work ends, though refilling caused issues before when the lake’s water quality was poor.

The lake refills at high tide, but too much river water is bad because it brings sewage and farm runoff, adding bacteria to the lake.

This harmed water in 2022, and the lake failed bathing standards that year. Natural Resources Wales found bacteria, and the lake level system also failed in 2021. They fixed it, and quality went to “good” last year.

Barry Mellor thanks everyone for patience, saying this is routine annual work.

Marine Lake was made in 1895 from marshland. It featured water slides and merry-go-rounds, and a small railway still circles the lake.

Walkers and joggers enjoy the 1.5km path, and children can play at a playground there. Swans also visit this wildlife haven.
