Here’s what’s been happening in local courts. Peter Rushton, 68, from Cheadle, got a driving ban for 29 months because he was drink-driving. His partner called the police on December 28 at 1:30 PM, saying he was drinking and left in his car.

He came back before the police got there and admitted drinking wine that morning. A breath test showed a reading of 120, way above the legal 35. Rushton admitted it was a silly thing to do and said he sought help for his alcohol problem. He pleaded guilty to drink-driving.

His lawyer said he had no prior convictions and that alcohol is a big problem for him. His wife reported him and hid his keys, and he is now very sorry, the lawyer said. The court gave him a 12-month community order, requiring rehab and alcohol treatment. He also got fined and has to pay costs.

Next, Wojciech Krzus, 39, from Bradeley, got 10 penalty points because he refused a breath test. Police saw him in a Mercedes on Christmas Eve at Sprink Bank Road’s junction. A man in the passenger seat seemed asleep, and police smelled alcohol.

The man’s speech was slurred, and he wouldn’t say where the keys were. He also refused to exit the vehicle and would not provide a breath sample at the station, saying he argued with his wife and then sat in the car. Krzus admitted failing to provide a breath sample.

His lawyer said he did nothing wrong, just fell asleep, and that he will struggle to find work. Losing his license would affect him, the lawyer added. The court fined him, and he must pay costs.

Then, Gheorghe Nanu, 37, from Hartshill, also got 10 penalty points for being in charge of a vehicle while drunk. He called police on Christmas Day at 2:50 AM, reporting someone was vandalizing his car.

Police found him in the car with the engine running. He failed a breath test, and at the station, his reading was 123, over three times the legal limit. Nanu admitted being in charge while over the limit.

His lawyer said he had a good record, called the police himself about the damage, and cooperated with the officers. She said he would lose his mechanic job and has lived in the UK for ten years. The court gave him a community order, requiring unpaid work, and he must pay costs.

Finally, Karen Rose, 51, from Stafford, got a driving ban lasting 17 months because she was drink-driving. Police saw her in a Hyundai on December 21 when she pulled into an off-license.

Police smelled alcohol and gave her a test, which showed she was over the limit. Her lowest reading was 62 at the station, where the legal limit remains at 35. Rose admitted to drink-driving.

Her lawyer said she felt okay to drive, as it was only a short trip, and she should have walked, she now realizes. The court fined her and ordered her to pay costs, and she can reduce her ban by taking a course.
