Local courts often see violent crimes. People use weapons to hurt others, but fists can also be weapons. Many people cause serious harm with punches and kicks, and some even die from single punches. Luckily, many offenders are caught and jailed.

Here are some recent cases that show the misery people inflict with their bare hands.

Mason Ibbotson killed Shaun Roberts with one punch and then celebrated as Roberts lay unconscious. Roberts was an army corporal out with colleagues when the attack happened. Ibbotson’s group targeted them for being outsiders. Ibbotson admitted manslaughter, and the court sentenced him to six years in a young offenders institution.

David Moore punched his friend, causing serious injury in a drunken attack outside a pub. The victim fell, hitting his head and suffering a brain bleed and skull fractures. Moore pleaded guilty to inflicting GBH and received a 21-month jail sentence. He has a history of prior convictions.

James Hickson was part of a gang that attacked a father in front of his son. The victim was delivering pizza to his parents when a girl screamed at and pushed him. The gang then surrounded and assaulted him. Hickson punched the man, knocking him out, and he was sentenced to a suspended jail term.

Gary Clews punched a blind man to the ground and then stamped on the victim. He accused the man of disrespecting his girlfriend and also threatened him with acid. Clews damaged the victim’s door with a hammer and was jailed for two years and ten months.

Mark Wyatt punched his cousin after a football match. A single punch caused a life-changing brain injury when the victim fell and hit his head. Surgeons had to remove part of his skull. Wyatt admitted causing grievous bodily harm and got a suspended sentence, plus alcohol restrictions and community work.
