Water treatment plants in North Cork upgraded, improving water quality for over 4,300 people!

Uisce Eireann spent money on two plants: Mount North and Mitchelstown. Mount North got €425,000 for upgrades, while Mitchelstown got €480,000. This investment got both plants off the “at risk” list, which serve over 4,300 people.
The upgrades will greatly benefit residents, providing better water treatment. New pipes offer a safer and more reliable supply, which helps both homes and businesses.
Mitchelstown previously struggled with excessive Trihalomethanes and Mount North faced issues with Cryptosporidium. Through the upgrades, both plants addressed their specific problems and were successfully removed from the EPA’s list.
The “at risk” list identifies water supplies that require improvements. While being on the list did not indicate unsafe water, it signaled the EPA’s desire for enhanced standards. This ensures a reliable water supply moving forward..
Other Cork areas still require attention, including Castletownbere, Glashaboy, and Macroom. Newmarket, Whiddy Island, and Whitegate are also impacted and Uisce Eireann has plans to address these challenges.
Deirdre O’Loughlin highlighted Uisce Eireann’s commitment to identifying and mitigating any risks to water quality. Protecting public health remains their primary objective.
The Mitchelstown upgrade is particularly significant as it ensures compliance with water regulations. It also substantially lowers the probability of future water-related issues.
