Okay, so it’s 1970 in Newcastle. People were shopping on Northumberland Street.
Fenwick is still a fancy store there today. Woolworth’s was popular, but it closed in 1984. It opened way back in 1913. Laszlo Torday took a photo. It’s from Newcastle Libraries.
It’s one of ten recalling scenes from 55 years ago.
Newcastle United played Anderlecht at St James’ Park. Wyn Davies played well that night. Over 59,000 people cheered them on! They won 3-1, but lost the first away leg 2-0. They didn’t advance in the European competition. They had won it the year before.
Commercial Union House was being built on Pilgrim Street. Many disliked its modern design. They tore it down in 2022. Mary Bell and Lily Baldwin stood outside their homes. Their Clara Street homes were in Benwell. The area was being redeveloped. People listened to a speaker in the Bigg Market. This tradition does not happen anymore.
Ted Heath’s party won the election. They beat Harold Wilson’s government. The Beatles broke up as a band. Brazil won the World Cup in Mexico then. Pele was a real football superstar.
“The Banana Splits” debuted on British TV. So did “A Question Of Sport” and “Catweazle”. “MAS*H” was a hit movie. So were “The Aristocats” and “Kelly’s Heroes”. Songs on the UK chart included Edison Lighthouse, John Lennon, and Peter Paul & Mary.
