A modern apartment block rises on the site of Guildford Crescent. The demolition sparked outrage among Cardiff citizens.

In 2023, most facades were torn down, horrifying Cardiff citizens. The developer did not have permission to demolish.
GT Guildford Crescent Limited applied to demolish what was left, claiming the buildings weren’t structurally sound. Cardiff Council learned the facade had been demolished; this was a breach of planning rules. They ordered the developer to stop the work immediately.
GT Guildford Crescent Limited will rebuild the facade, as outlined in the original application.
Work is now progressing quickly at the site, with a new 30-story apartment block going up. Luxury apartments are part of a larger plan. There are 140 one-bedroom and 132 two-bedroom units, along with a gym, lounge, game areas and roof terrace. The site also includes bike storage and retail space.
This building caused much controversy in Cardiff as developers demolished the 19th-century façade originally.
In 2019, residents strongly opposed the project, feeling Cardiff culture was at risk. Twenty thousand people signed a protest petition, and one thousand protested in Cardiff’s streets.
