A Spar shop is coming to Harefield. It will be at 6-10 High Street. The council approved its license to sell alcohol. Some local businesses worried about crime.

The store will open from 7 AM to 11 PM daily. You can buy alcohol anytime it’s open.

Harefield Wine objected through Harleen Kaur. She mentioned weekend drunkenness can cause issues and questioned if Spar would refuse service to drunks. Theft is a concern due to alcohol. Another alcohol shop might worsen problems, she stated. Drunken people can cause increased disturbances.

The applicant’s barrister, Charles Merritt, spoke. He said they must refuse service to drunks. Police or council made no objections initially.

Councillor Kelly Martin had layout concerns. The beer fridge was near the door and he wondered how they’d prevent theft. The counter’s location concerned him too, as it’s far from the exit.

The applicant said three staff members will always work. This helps them handle bad behavior. H&H News & Wine Ltd will run the shop. They have two stores already, in Rickmansworth and St. Albans.
