New €280 Social Welfare Payment Starts Today For Thousands In Ireland

Many families in Ireland will get a new payment worth €280. This payment is called the Newborn Baby Grant, and it is for eligible families. Dara Calleary, the Minister for Social Protection, said the grants are going out this week. About 4,400 families should receive this payment now.

The grant is intended for babies born recently, specifically after December 1, 2024. Their families must also qualify for child benefit. New parents should be aware of this grant opportunity. Starting next month, parents will receive the grant along with their child benefit payment, simplifying the process of receiving the money.

The New Baby Grant provides €280 per child; therefore, if you have twins, you receive €560. This assistance helps families manage new expenses. Child benefit goes to parents of children under 16 who live in Ireland and meet the Habitual Residence Condition.

Child benefit can also be obtained for older children aged 16 to 18 who are in school or training full-time, or who are disabled. Full-time education includes primary and post-primary school, further education and training courses, and third-level colleges with few exceptions.

The Department of Social Protection normally pays the mother, including stepmothers. Fathers can receive it if the child does not live with the mother. If you care for a child who does not live with or is supported by their parents, you may also get child benefit.

If the child lives in two homes, the payment goes to the parent living with the child more often. If time is equal, the mother receives the benefit. Child Benefit is €140 each month per child. Everyone can get it, regardless of their income or social insurance status.

If you are new to child benefit, payments will start later, after the baby is born. From December 1st, new parents receive more; the first payment will be €420 total, encompassing the grant and child benefit.
