Council approves homes near a coal tip in Glynneath despite worries about roads and the tip’s proximity.

They will construct three detached homes there. They will also do related work. The area is off Merthyr Road and near a site with about forty houses.
Councillor Simon Knoyle asked the committee to review it. He and residents worried about roads and access. The site’s closeness to an old coal tip also caused concern.
Knoyle and someone from the public spoke. They feared more pressure on a small road. This narrow access road has bad visibility. They said near misses happened there, but people didn’t always report the accidents.
They thought the coal tip was too close, noting it slid it in 2017. But, the applicant’s representative spoke, stating the coal authority had no problems. They added only two accidents happened there in twenty years.
Officers suggested approval. A railway embankment divides the site and the tip. The coal authority checks the tip and will find future problems, officers noted.
After discussion, members voted to approve, six to three, with conditions attached. A separate vote rejected a site visit before the final vote.
