Edinburgh residents puzzled by an odd structure now know why it stands next to Preston Street Primary School.

Pupils call it simply “the structure.” It takes up a lot of playground space. Decorations and murals try to brighten it, yet it still looks odd. It contrasts with the school and nearby buildings.
Some think it is an unfinished building. They imagine a project stopped long ago. However, it’s not like the National Monument. The real reason is easier to understand.
This thing was built in the 1980s to support buildings next to the playground. It stops those tenements from falling into the school. People learned this in a 2014 report.
The school document says it provides support. This terrace of houses needs this support. The council and residents own the support structure, which also casts shade on the playground.
School children actually like the concrete thing and don’t think it ruins their playground. Kids see a chance to make a playhouse and want a shelter for games.
One local, Bryan Gourlay, shared his thoughts. He thinks it is too strong and big, and suggests other ways to support the wall. He thinks it ruins the school’s look.
