A new mural honors a man who helped build a town in Leicestershire. The mural includes steam trains and landmarks, with people calling the artwork “stunning.”

The mural showcases South Wigston’s history, with Orson Wright at its center. He is considered the town’s builder. The mural stands on Albion Street’s corner, honoring his work in making the town.

Oadby and Wigston Council ordered the artwork as part of town improvement projects. These projects aim to attract more visitors, and government money paid for this improvement work.

The official unveiling was on Monday, February 24th. It celebrated the opening of a new heritage center located on Canal Street’s corner. Peter Cousins spoke about Orson Wright’s impact during the event.

Cousins stated that the town owes much to Wright. He recognized the potential of railway expansion and bought land to build the town. This housed railway workers, and later, boot and shoe industries grew.

Wright’s business empire was substantial. He owned two hotels, a woodyard, an iron foundry, and a hat factory along with an electrical engineering works. All of this was achieved after starting with nothing at eight years old.

Online reaction has been highly positive. One person called the art beautiful, remembering learning about Wright in school. Another person simply described it as “stunning.”

Graffwerk, who organizes the Bring The Paint festival, designed and painted the mural. The council also hired them for other art, including a floral display in Oadby and a mural in Wigston that tells local history.

Councillor Lee Bentley discussed the project, stating that investing in town centers is important. He declared that making them welcoming is vital, as it gives each place its own identity.

Bentley said it’s vital to keep history alive and further stated he is happy to work with the heritage group. The murals reflect the community’s stories. He hopes it inspires people to learn more and feel proud.

Wigston will receive new benches and bike racks, in addition to wayfinding posts. These improvements are part of a larger plan.
