Morpeth, Northumberland, is named the best in the North East, surpassing Whitley Bay in a recent ranking.

Our region has many great spots to explore. You can walk, enjoy sea air, or see stunning views. Tasty food and drinks are also available. Sotheby’s experts made a top five towns list, based on their expert opinion.
Morpeth is at the top of this list. It’s ahead of Alnwick, a town not included. Whitley Bay and Hexham are also ranked lower. Barnard Castle and Staithes made the guide too.
Sotheby’s praises Morpeth greatly; it mixes history with a lively, modern market. Morpeth sits on the River Wansbeck. Its streets, markets, boutiques, and restaurants charm.
Sanderson Arcade is a notable shopping area. Carlisle Park has a paddling pool, and many people visit during summer. Morpeth Castle dates back to the 13th century. Wallington Hall is a National Trust estate.
Whitley Bay is also highly regarded, though not first. They call it a “warm seaside town.” The beach has a Blue Flag, and you can also find pubs, bakeries, and cafés.
Hexham is a great “British riverside town”. It has Viking history. Hexham Old Gaol shows interesting images and books, adding to the town’s rich history.
