Middlesbrough’s new Masjid Maryam opens February 23, sans Mohamed Hoblos, following community concerns.

The mosque wants community support and to build connections. The mosque will have an open day on February 25 where people can ask questions.
People can see how it helps the town.
The mayor was concerned about Hoblos.
Ben Houchen wrote to the Home Secretary because he wanted her to stop Hoblos, feeling it could hurt community ties.
Bob Blackman spoke in Parliament. He said Hoblos was a hate preacher and that Germany and Holland banned him. He wanted the UK to do the same.
Houchen shared a quote from Hoblos stating that prayer is vital. He compared those who skip prayer to criminals, making these harsh statements previously.
Hoblos is doing a UK tour called ‘Together as One’. The Middlesbrough visit was separate.
Luke Myer also spoke in Parliament, worrying about Hoblos visiting. He asked what the minister would do, and Dan Jarvis replied to Myer saying they could block entry if it hurts the public good. They would look at the situation.
Chris Cooke voiced his concerns, worried about the community impact. He said he would work toward the best result.
The mosque wants unity.
They named it Maryam to honor St Mary’s Church and they value the residents of Acklam.
The mosque is aware of concerns. Hoblos has visited the UK before, and never caused problems then. The mosque asked him to explain.
They will open without him after years of work led to this hub. It will serve and help the community.
The Home Office has been asked for comment.
Some Conservatives want a lifetime ban. It would stop Hoblos entering the UK and Chris Philp wrote to Yvette Cooper.
Philp quoted Hoblos’ words.
He said Hoblos spread hate. Hoblos said prayerful criminals rate higher and are higher than good people who don’t pray. He was speaking from Allah’s point of view.
