Liverpool Mayor addresses criticism of metal fences at Sandhills Station fan zone, promising future improvements.

The video showed metal fences in the car park. They will manage crowds going to the stadium. Rotheram said they want fans to travel safely, and the fan zone helps people get through quickly. The aim includes a reliable match day experience.
Many fans are not happy with these plans. Some call the fan zone “embarrassing,” thinking metal barriers are not enough. Fans expected more after many years of planning.
The Combined Authority responded to criticism, saying this is only phase one and not a station rebuild. According to them, the queue system avoids dangerous overcrowding. This system prioritizes a smooth and safe experience and is similar to systems at Aintree.
The Authority says more is coming soon, including a transformation of the area. They plan toilets and a fixed stage, along with food areas and digital screens. They will improve lighting and add CCTV. Staff will help all fans, even those needing extra support.
They want everything ready before the 2025/26 season. A test event is scheduled for February 17th. The Authority promises to update fans as they work to create the best experience.
