Manchester’s Thirsty Scholar Reborn as O’Connell’s Irish Pub
The Thirsty Scholar was liked for drinks and live music, especially by students. Dom, the new owner, dreamed of an Irish pub and bought Thirsty Scholar when it became available. He wants the design to fully express the Irish feel.
Extensive renovations happened under the new owner, with fixtures coming from all over Ireland. The bar front came from a Dublin bank from the early 1900s, and seating is from places that include a cathedral in Tralee. Some items are even from Manchester Cathedral.
The upstairs area, once The Attic, is now a cozy pub extension and includes its own bar and a snug. Wooden panels and Irish stained glass decorate the interior, and a big whisky cabinet displays many whiskies.
The outdoor area now seats 80 people, and events will happen there during summer. Guinness and Teeling Whisky murals will decorate the arch. They will have live music weekly, and sports events will be shown all year.
O’Connell’s opens February 27th with free whisky from 5-7PM and will have live music all weekend. Regular hours are Mon-Fri, 11:30 AM to 12 AM; Friday, 11:30 AM to 1 AM; and Sunday, 11:30 AM to 1 AM.
