Nedjo Osmanovic got a prison sentence that lasted three and a half years. He set his own apartment on fire and then ran away from the scene.

CCTV footage showed him starting the fire on June 21st last year. Nedjo, who is thirty-five years old, threw a petrol-soaked towel into his room.

Thankfully, no one suffered injuries, but the fire caused £8,000 in damages. The apartment was a leased flat and the leaseholder gave Osmanovic’s details to police.

The court jailed him earlier this week after he admitted to reckless arson that endangered lives in the building.

Footage shows him at his flat’s door on Chester Road, seemingly holding a black bin bag. Flames quickly spread in the room.

Osmanovic turned and shut the door, then ran down the stairs as black smoke billowed from the doorway.

Police arrested Osmanovic a month later at Salford Royal Hospital, where he told officers he wanted to end his life.

Experts examined the scene after the fire and found petrol was the accelerant. The fire alarm reduced the risk, and sprinklers and fire doors also helped.

Judge Timothy Clayson sentenced Osmanovic, stating that he lit a petrol-soaked towel. The fire caused damage to his flat and endangered the other residents.

The judge spoke about his mental health and that drinking worsens his health. Osmanovic is from Newbury Avenue.
