A man is charged with harassing Education Minister Paul Givan via abusive emails related to Lisneal College.

The suspect, 62 years old, was charged with harassment following reports of abusive emails sent on February 7 and he must appear in court next month. Givan confirmed he reported emails to police earlier this month, the emails concerned Lisneal College in Derry.
Givan stated he reported malicious emails on February 7 regarding Lisneal College, adding that abusive emails are not acceptable and that harassment of public figures hurts democracy and prevents others from seeking public office.
Givan said he is used to political debate, however, these particular emails were based on wrong information and he deems this unacceptable behavior. Public figures have a right to work without harassment.
Minor Works projects happen at many schools and follow normal procedures. Some people suggest he was involved in decisions regarding this project and that there was a lack of transparency, which he says this is disappointing.
He said he will continue his job and will not be deterred, continuing to serve the people as Northern Ireland’s Education Minister.
A police spokesperson stated that a 62-year-old man was charged and faces court on March 14 in Belfast; the charge followed a report concerning abusive emails sent on February 7 and the Public Prosecution Service will review the charge as standard procedure.
