The M4 and M48 roads closed in both directions. Police found human remains there after Avon and Somerset Police received a call at 6:40 PM reporting a body on the road.

The closures began on the English side of the bridges with both the Prince of Wales Bridge and the Severn Bridge impacted. This resulted in major traffic problems, affecting travel in and out of Wales.

National Highways specified that the M4 closed between the Prince of Wales Bridge and Junction 20 at Almondsbury. Additionally, the M48 closed between the M4 and Junction 1 near the Severn Bridge and some links from the M5 were also closed.

According to National Highways, the police are leading the investigation. A police spokesperson confirmed the M4 was fully closed after a body was discovered between Junctions 20 (Almondsbury Interchange) and 21 (Awkley).

Drivers initially contacted the police at 6:40 PM on Saturday, February 22, to report an incident on the road. Upon arrival, officers discovered the human remains.

Police are now working to identify the individual and notify their family, and also investigating how the person came to be there. The road is expected to remain closed overnight but potentially reopen early on Sunday, February 23.

Police are appealing to drivers who traveled on that section of the M4 for assistance. Anyone with information or dashcam footage is asked to call 101, quoting reference number 5224047292.
