The accident occurred Thursday at 9:55 p.m. on the southbound M6, between junctions 16 and 15. A car driver was arrested and is suspected of causing death by dangerous driving.
Cliff’s family gave a statement, sharing that Cliff moved from New Zealand three decades ago. He settled in Wigan and had a family, leaving behind six kids and five grandkids. Cliff loved playing, coaching, and refereeing rugby.
Police reported the incident involved two vehicles: a Toyota Avensis hit a MAN truck. Cliff Tamou died at the scene, where he was outside his broken-down lorry. The Toyota driver, age 22, went to the hospital with leg and face injuries, which are not life-threatening.
Police seek witnesses to the crash and want anyone with CCTV or dashcam footage to come forward. They also want information to aid their investigation, and witnesses can call 101, referencing incident number 783 from February 27.
