The historic Liverpool Olympia hides secrets beneath its floors. Few visitors realize the venue’s rich past as a theatre, circus and more.

Frank Matcham designed it, and the building is Grade II* Listed. Over time, it has served as a theatre, circus, and cinema. It also became a dance hall and bingo hall.
Chris Zorba owns it now; his dad bought it from Mecca Leisure long ago. The family has worked hard on it. Now, you can see music, boxing, and MMA there. They kept old features too.
There’s even an ‘elephant pit’ from the circus days! Andy Hudston gave a tour and showed the ECHO the elephant pit. They are making it safe to visit. Elephants once rose from the floor there!
A machine lifted them as the audience watched from above. Rumors say tunnels exist; one went outside the city, and another went to the pub across the road. Performers used it for quick drinks.
They haven’t found the tunnels yet, but sources suggest they are real. People at shows don’t know what’s below! The Olympia turns 120 this year.
They plan a special birthday show to honor its history and past performers. More celebrations are coming later. Chris Zorba is proud of the Olympia.
This year marks a big milestone, and they start celebrating April 24. Expect music, comedy, and sports. They toured the building and saw the elephant pit. A balcony closed since the ’50s opened.
