Locals oppose a new fire station in Leverton, Lincolnshire, citing road safety, noise, and light concerns despite council approval.
The current station is almost 90 years old. People think it is one of Lincolnshire’s worst. Over 100 locals opposed the new Main Road site. They worry about road safety, noise, and lights.
Judith Welbourn said people want a new station. The issue is the location, she explained, mentioning safety concerns for kids on the path and the danger added by construction work.
The Lincolnshire council heard the opposition Monday. Councilors were surprised by the residents’ views. Councillor Ashton was sad about the petition and thinks people should support fire stations.
He hopes they never need the fire station’s help. The station will run a few hours weekly, and recruits can train there now without traveling to Boston or Skegness.
Councillor Pepper knows Lincolnshire’s fire stations. He said Leverton’s was the worst, even ten years ago. Pepper thinks the station is cramped, very old, and that people are imagining something bigger than it will be. He also feels the location is good.
Station manager Dziadkiewicz agreed it is unfit. He thinks the current station is small, outdated, and inefficient. The old station lacks space for training, welfare, or decontamination.
Staff often go to Boston or Skegness. Councillor Ashleigh-Morris feels Leverton should be happy as fires could be devastating otherwise and help from Boston would take too long. Having a station locally is valuable. The council approved the new fire station with a unanimous vote in favor.
