Acquiring groceries necessitates a twenty-mile trip, requiring residents to drive to Tesco or Aldi. The nearest train station is a forty-minute drive away in Aberystwyth.

A study illustrated the average distance to services, such as a doctor, bank, or school, to be approximately 6.8 miles. YouTuber David Burnip explored life in New Quay, documenting his experiences.

David described the town as “absolutely gorgeous,” appreciating the uniquely painted, colorful houses that created a striking visual contrast. The individual color choices of each house adds to the town’s character.

The roads surrounding New Quay are primarily B-roads and local streets that connect to the A487, which leads to larger towns. David observed the limited presence of motorways in Wales, an observation reinforced by his drive from Manchester, which largely consisted of country roads. One resident, preparing for upcoming surgery, faces a logistical challenge. They are scheduled to be picked up in Aberystwyth and transported to Swansea for the procedure, after which they will be returned to Aberystwyth and must find their own way home.

David noted a lack of key amenities, including banks, large shops and train stations. He identified only one ATM listed, making buses the primary mode of transportation for many residents.

The town originated as a fishing village, with herring as its main catch. Today, fishermen primarily focus on lobsters and prawns.

David understood Dylan Thomas’s inspiration, recognizing the town’s inherent charm, beauty, and peaceful atmosphere. The isolation may appeal to some, offering a sense of remoteness far removed from the bustle of modern life.
