The Lidl in Cork city centre will reopen soon. It got a big makeover. The reopening happens later this month, but it will wait until a bad smell goes away.

The Cornmarket Street Lidl shut down in January for a major remodel. It is set to reopen on March 20, a Thursday, revealing a brand new floor.

New flooring caused a strange problem: an unusual smell. Because of the basement location, it stuck around and lasted longer than expected.

They finished the floor work on February 28. The smell should disappear quickly. Lidl apologized to neighbors for the bad smell because it bothered both businesses and residents.

A local showed CorkBeo an apology letter. Lidl also gave them a gift card they can use after the store reopens at the renovated Lidl store.

The letter said a new floor was part of the update and the floor install makes a distinct smell. The basement location made it linger, so they used fans to reduce the odor.

The letter reassured residents it’s safe. The product is common in stores, and health and safety experts confirmed that it’s not harmful, just unpleasant.

Lidl’s letter continued with another apology, acknowledging the inconvenience. The floor work finished February 28, and they anticipated that the smell should end very soon.

Lidl also included a goodwill gift to recognized disruption from the upgrade. They hope to see everyone at the new store and appreciates everyone’s patience.

Shoppers will be happy when it unlocks and when the odor vanishes. The Cornmarket Lidl offered affordable food nearby.

The shopping center gained more visitors lately. The Chemist Warehouse from Aussie grew popular, and TK Maxx upstairs continues drawing crowds.
