The priest also offered sympathy to Stephen’s siblings, twins Zara and Neill, and twins Kay and David. He gave condolences for Stephen’s young children, Alfie and Noah. Stephen died too soon at age 31, and the priest noted the tragic death’s nature.

Stephen’s health was poor recently, but his family provided support. The main prayer asks for Stephen’s peace. The church has buried many young adults recently, some from natural causes, others after illnesses, long or short.

Recently, other causes led to burials. The priest chose not to name them to reduce further agony. These deaths leave heartbroken families and, sometimes, fearful communities where people worry about their children and the impact of a growing lifestyle.

Stephen’s death is one of many recent young deaths. The priest hopes it will be the last. Young people gather at funerals often, asking for these deaths to stop, but sometimes people forget, and it happens again.

Items representing Stephen’s life sat at the altar. These included a fishing rod and his picture. Stephen’s sister, Zara, thanked medical staff, including paramedics, Altnagelvin staff, ICU doctors and nurses, and Royal Victoria Hospital staff. They tried hard to save Stephen.

Zara said they treated Stephen carefully, and the family is forever grateful for their aid. She described Stephen as a beloved son, father, and brother. He fought bravely but could not win. The family feels heartbroken by his death but is comforted by being with him, surrounding him with love.

Zara asked Stephen to watch over his family, mentioning his parents and siblings. She also requested he watch over his sons, Alfie and Noah, who love him very much. The family will watch his sons grow up and see Stephen live on through them. Saying goodbye is very hard as a family. Zara hoped God would keep him safe. They will miss Stephen forever.

Stephen’s sons touched his coffin as his family left the church. Dylan McCrossan, age 31, faces a murder charge involving Stephen Holmes.
