Police data covers England and Wales. It shows over five million non-fraud crimes happened in the year ending September 2024. Leicestershire Police recorded 96,411 of these crimes.
Areas are split into smaller, safer zones. Crime rates compare different places fairly. The rate is crimes per 1,000 residents, helping compare areas of different sizes.
Leicester has the highest crime rate in its county, with 122 crimes for every 1,000 people. That means one crime reported for every eight people.
Leicester ranks 19th most dangerous in England and Wales, out of over 300 areas altogether. Charnwood is next in Leicestershire, reporting 76 crimes per 1,000 people. North West Leicestershire reports 70 crimes per 1,000.
Rutland is the safest local area, with 41 crimes per 1,000 people, equating to one crime for every 25 people. Rutland is the fifth safest area in England and Wales.
National crime stats show some changes. Homicides decreased by four percent this past year, while knife crimes increased by four percent. Firearm offenses increased by 19 percent more, and robbery rose four percent as well. Shoplifting increased by 23 percent too.
The Crime Survey of England and Wales also published data, based on face-to-face interviews. The survey gauges crime’s impact and amount. They estimate 9.5 million headline crimes occurred in the year ending September 2024.
That number rose by one million from last year. This was mainly from a fraud increase of 19 percent. About 4.4 million people experienced harassment, around 2.2 million were domestic abuse victims, and stalkers preyed on 1.6 million victims. Then, 1.0 million people suffered a sexual assault.
