A major road in Lancashire will remain closed potentially until 2026 due to a landslip caused by heavy rain.

The B6236 Haslingden Old Road is affected. It connects Blackburn and Haslingden towns. The road closed after heavy rain on New Year’s Day. Flooding caused a landslip at that time.
The road wall collapsed because of it, and one road lane also fell away. This key road stays shut now because authorities say the road is too dangerous, even with controls. Temporary routes exist for drivers to use.
Officials consulted other groups about this and made a car and truck route change. A separate route exists for heavier trucks. Pedestrians and cyclists may still use it, and they will keep checking how this works.
The council said repairs present big problems. The road may stay shut all through 2025. They have made new routes available now.
A member of the council spoke about the road, saying the project is complex and early. An accurate repair date cannot be estimated now. He also mentioned safety concerns for drivers on that road section.
Site work is underway currently as they survey the ground to find solutions. This will help them see the problem source and allow a suitable repair plan.
New diversion routes are being used now. He asked drivers to follow the signs there, also saying that the issue is complex, and it will take time.
