A man mimicking Jim Carrey was jailed after burgling a home and stealing items, including a wedding dress, in Stoke-on-Trent.

Devon Bentley was wanted in April 2023, and police posted his mugshot. Online, he joked about his bowl cut, saying he looked like Jim Carrey, who had that haircut in “Dumb and Dumber.”
In the movie, Carrey played Lloyd Christmas, who went on a road trip. People online made fun of Bentley’s hair, and he agreed it looked like Carrey’s, two years before his sentence.
Bentley received three and a half years in jail at Stoke-on-Trent Crown Court. He admitted burglary, theft, and handling stolen goods.
Bentley, from Stoke-on-Trent, admitted targeting an empty home in February 2024, and he pleaded guilty to the crime. Police say Bentley broke into the garage, stealing items worth around £1,655.
The stolen items included a dress and medicine, along with ornaments, a toy car, two coats, and a suitcase. Detectives found evidence at the scene, identifying Bentley as the suspect.
Police searched his home and discovered many stolen items there. He was arrested and questioned in March, leading to formal charges against him.
Bentley’s DNA linked him to a stolen Audi, taken from Stone on October 9. The same Audi was at two other crime scenes and used in a bike theft on October 11. The thefts happened in Cellarhead and Werrington.
Sergeant Marc Proctor spoke about Bentley’s actions, saying he stole things of sentimental value for his own gain, and justice was rightly served. He stated that burglary affects victims seriously, and police take it very seriously.
He hopes the sentence shows their work, and they want justice for everyone impacted. Edmund Potts defended Bentley in court, saying Bentley had a tough childhood and Bentley has a partner with a young child.
He has reflected on his life and wants to be a positive influence on his son. He knows he needs to change his ways.
Recorder Robert Smith sentenced Bentley, stating Bentley is still young and acknowledges he had a difficult past. His criminal behavior stems from a chaotic life. Smith warned Bentley about being a bad role model if he doesn’t change.
