Lots of people are getting scam texts. These texts say you can get a discount on your electric bill. They pretend to be from Social Protection.

The Department of Social Protection knows about this and wants you to know it’s a fake. Do not talk to these scammers, and don’t give them your PPS number or bank info. The department will not ask for this by text or call.

Do not click any links in these messages, as they could steal your info. The government offers energy bill help automatically, which comes in two payments of €125, and you don’t need to sign up for it.

The money goes straight to your electric account. If you gave scammers your bank info, call your bank fast and tell them about the possible fraud. Report scam texts or calls to the police, as this can stop scammers from hurting others.

Scams rose after the Budget 2025 announcement; scammers want your info for payments. You get lump sums or double payments automatically. Do not apply or give personal details. The department posted a warning on social media.

They know about fake texts from the department asking for personal info for payments. Staff will never ask for your details by text. If you get a text, don’t reply and don’t share your PPS number or bank details. If you shared bank info, call your bank now.

If you shared personal info, contact the police right away. Be careful if you get such texts or calls, and use official websites only.
