Some people didn’t get their Child Benefit lump sum. It’s a €420 payment tied to the New Baby Grant. This grant should give €280 plus €140 from Child Benefit.

The New Baby Grant is €280 for each child under Budget 2025. So, twins would get €560. This is a one-off payment for babies born after December 1, 2024.

You must qualify for Child Benefit to get the grant. Child Benefit gives monthly payments for kids under 16, and you must live in Ireland.

You must also meet the Habitual Residence Condition (HRC). EU or EEA citizens working here meet the HRC. You can get benefits for ages 16-18 if in full-time education or training, and those with a disability who cannot support themselves qualify.

Full-time education includes primary and post-primary school, as well as third-level courses. It doesn’t include work-related courses, and apprenticeships are also excluded. Teagasc courses are affected if work is more than class time.

Payments usually arrive on the first Tuesday of each month. The child’s mother or stepmother usually receives Child Benefit. The father or stepfather can claim if the child doesn’t live with them.

A sole carer can claim if a child isn’t with their parents. The Department of Social Protection decides who gets paid. It goes to the parent the child lives with most. If time is equal, the mother gets paid.

This scheme is universal, so parents can get the extra cash regardless of income or social insurance. New parents receive their first payment after the baby’s born, arriving at the start of the next month.
