Inquest Resumes for Teen Emily Moore Who Died in County Durham Care
Emily was under NHS Trust care. This was the Tees, Esk and Wear Valleys Trust. She died on February 15, 2020. She was only 18. Emily stayed at West Lane, then Lanchester Road Hospital. She died after just one week there.
The NHS Trust went to court last year and were accused of unsafe care. This allegedly caused harm. The court acquitted the Trust, which provides services across Teesside.
The Care Quality Commission brought the case because they thought Emily faced a risk of harm. The judge didn’t agree after expert evidence.
Emily was found in the bathroom during checking. She had harmed herself and died two days later due to a brain injury. Emily was on Tunstall Ward and held under the Mental Health Act.
A pre-inquest review happened Monday at a coroner’s court. The inquest will resume with a jury, including her time at West Lane, Newberry Ward between March and July 2019. The coroner said the inquest will resume.
Emily’s dad spoke after the hearing, saying he is happy but feels it went too far. He thanked the coroner and the public, stating it has been a five-year journey.
He said the inquest relives memories, which creates anxiety, but stated it’s all for Emily’s care and life. It was a short life, but hopefully, they can move on as she will never be forgotten. He still wants a public inquiry, believing it would be the best outcome.
The NHS Trust pleaded guilty to two other charges relating to Christine Harnett, 17, and another patient. Christie was at West Lane Hospital and died in 2019. The hospital has since closed.
The NHS Trust stated they feel for Emily’s family and that it’s a difficult process. They will cooperate fully with the coroner.
Another review will be on March 14 to plan the inquest, including when it happens.
