A man died after police shot him near a Derby police station, leading to an inquest. The jury decided it was lawful killing.

The event happened October 7, 2022. Marius Ciolac, armed with a knife, damaged police cars outside the police station that day. He also had paint and a cat.

Police tried to stop him using Tasers and stun grenades, but these efforts did not work. An officer felt threatened when Ciolac moved towards him quickly. The officer shot him in the stomach, and Ciolac died later in the hospital.

The jury heard Ciolac understood English, yet he did not stop his actions. They gave their condolences to Ciolac’s family.

The coroner won’t issue a report, feeling it would not help prevent future deaths. She thanked the family for their participation.

A police leader, Simon Blatchly, said it was a tragic situation and expressed his sympathy to Ciolac’s family. Officers tried to protect everyone involved and initially used less lethal options to negotiate with Ciolac.

Ciolac rushed at an officer with a knife, leaving that officer with no other choice but to fire his weapon quickly. Police rarely fire their weapons, which demonstrates their training and care.

The police watchdog reviewed the incident and found the force was appropriate. The officers tried to keep everyone safe, risking their own lives that day. Police staff are people with families and feel fear like anyone else.

Blatchly is proud of the officers for trying to resolve it safely and said they will support those affected by the incident.
