Humpback sightings occur rarely in the UK, though they have grown more common recently. Experts think the whale population may have increased, and ocean currents possibly changed as well.
Whale sightings increased in frequency, especially near Padstow Bay. Minke whales were also spotted around Cornwall. People usually see them in deep waters, but minke whales rarely venture near the coast unless deep water is close by.
St Ives, Lands End, and the Isles of Scilly have recorded sightings. CornwallLive reported that many people recently saw whales. On January 17th, David Winch filmed a whale swimming near Bedruthan in Mawgan Porth, which is close to Newquay.
People also filmed a huge humpback whale near Newquay on January 2nd. Holidaymakers saw a whale splash near the Isles of Scilly on January 4th.
