A glimpse into Hull and beyond in 1989: Sky’s launch, political shifts, Berlin Wall’s fall, and landmark local developments.

Wallace and Gromit debuted in their first film. Also, “Home and Away” premiered on ITV. The Liberal Democrat party formed then, as Social Democrats and Liberals joined together.
Big events marked 1989 too. The Berlin Wall fell in that year, and leaders declared the Cold War over. They included Thatcher, Bush, and Gorbachev. The Soviet Union dissolved later, in 1991.
“Doctor Who” ended its original run after 26 seasons. The show came back in 2005. Hull saw a huge shopping center being built called Princes Quay.
It was built over Princes Dock. People started seeing its unique design. It opened to the public in March 1991. Nearby, they dug up Beverley Gate, which sits at the top of Whitefriargate.
This find was very old, from medieval times. King Charles I couldn’t enter through that gate in April 1642 before the English Civil War.
