The station will be a two-story L-shaped building facing Broadway. West Yorkshire Police applied for the permit, although the application lacked specific details. A council report offered more information about the project.
The current station is unfit for use and costs too much to operate. A new headquarters will open in Dewsbury, and the Huddersfield site will be a smaller station. About 258 people will work there, with ninety-eight employees on site at once.
They cannot reveal the station layout publicly for security reasons. The permission requires some contributions, including £57,000 to improve a junction and £40,000 to upgrade a crossing.
The police submitted the application in August. The new station will house all Huddersfield policing teams, who will move from the Castlegate building. Officers will stay in their communities, and residents can visit a public help desk there.
The Castlegate station stays open during construction, and they expect to finish the new station in 2026.
One person worries about the new location, while someone else wants more police in town, believing visibility is important. The person says changing perceptions is key because people feel the town center is unsafe, and moving the station might not help, potentially reinforcing negative feelings.
