Merthyr Tydfil is seeing more property investors. This town was once a major iron producer and sits just north of Cardiff. Merthyr was actually the world’s first iron town. The town made 40% of Britain’s iron exports in the 1820s, and even sent rails to Russia and South America.

The town’s ironworks declined over time, causing social and economic problems. Now, things might be improving for Merthyr, as it’s becoming known as a property “hotspot.” House prices are rising quickly there. Rightmove says prices rose by 7.3% recently, jumping from £171,007 to £183,550.

A cafe manager, Kealy, says few customers live locally, as many come from Cardiff and Swansea. She and her fiancé bought a house in Heolgerrig. Rising prices forced them to increase their budget, and they had to spend over £200,000 in the end.

Kealy thinks locals will struggle with house prices and questions if wages match prices. She notes homelessness is a problem in Merthyr, but says the schools are really good.

Fernando Freitas, who owns The Portugalles, worries about rising homelessness. He thinks people won’t afford homes with current wages. His place offers a spot for locals to gather.

Diana Pais works at The Crown Inn and is a student at the University of South Wales. She says Merthyr jobs often have low pay, and thinks buying a home is now harder. Diana does see investment and a friendly scene in town.

Councillor Geraint Thomas agrees there’s a good community and hopes newcomers will join the local culture. He notices more Airbnbs in the town and feels Merthyr lacks affordable housing. He notes the high council tax in Wales and wants better-paying jobs for residents. A new college might help.

Elizabeth Bedford manages the BID, which wants to improve Merthyr’s town center. She has helped bring people to town events. She now aims to create a shopping app and wants a “one-stop shop” for visitors. She highlights the beauty near Merthyr, which offers castles, mountains and beaches within reach. People are proud and hardworking in her view.
