Town cancels annual Holocaust memorial service due to worries about reactions to the Gaza conflict.

Merthyr Leisure Trust made the service decision. Staff shortages and funding issues played a role. The Gaza conflict also caused staff concern, and a report noted this to the council. Pontypridd held an event in Ynysangharad Park where councillors and police attended and laid a wreath.
Councillor Clive Jones inquired about next year’s plans, wondering if the council would organize the service. Anna Williams-Price responded, stating that the community team suggested a private event. They cited political sensitivities, but members were not aware though.
Williams-Price mentioned the leisure trust’s past public events. She stressed the community team’s advice for future events. Councillor Jones hopes they will review the situation, as people want to know why the service didn’t happen.
Councillor Lisa Mytton expressed strong disapproval, stating she felt offended by the decision. She wants more discussion about it and asked about similar advice for LGBTQ events. Mytton thinks those events could also face risks.
Mytton thinks Holocaust Memorial Day is vital. She thinks Merthyr Tydfil has a large Jewish community and desires equal treatment for everyone.
