New design proposes curved roads alongside Hammersmith Bridge, separating traffic from pedestrians. Council calls it a “press stunt”.

The new roads would be on each side. Designers call them ‘elliptical ribbons’. Sybarite said they told council leaders. But, the council called it a “press stunt.” They said they weren’t involved, sadly.
It doesn’t mean anyone will use them. The bridge links Hammersmith and Barnes. It shut to cars in April 2019. They found cracks in the bridge base.
People can walk and cycle across now. Cyclists must get off their bikes, though. The council spent £48 million already. This was to stabilize the bridge.
Fully fixing it will cost more. The recent estimate is £250 million. It’s a lot of money needed. In 2021, a deal was set between groups.
The council pays a third of the cost. Transport for London and government pay the rest. The council may need to charge tolls. They asked the government for money in 2022. It is still waiting for approval.
The companies want plants in the middle road. People could walk through nature. This would make passing easier. The new bridges would use steel. It would look like they disappear. This won’t distract from the old bridge.
The designers think of Hammersmith Bridge a lot. They also think it could help the area. Hammersmith Council doesn’t think so at all. They still think it is a publicity stunt.
Another idea also exists. People suggested no cars should cross it. Instead, driverless pods could assist. These pods would help people with mobility issues. They could cross the bridge easier. A cycle lane could exist, as well. This idea supposedly costs much less.
