Railway upgrades near Guildford promise safer travel on the North Downs Line, connecting key locations and Gatwick Airport.

The railway links Reading and Guildford, and also connects Redhill and Gatwick Airport. Workers improved several locations along the line, replacing wood on the River Wey bridge with a new synthetic material that lasts longer. This should mean fewer future closures.
Rail changes should create smoother rides, allowing passengers to enjoy smoother travel around curves.
SurreyLive reporters went to see the action. Teams worked in cold weather, aiming to finish by February 16.
Workers stabilized the embankment and cleared plants. Improvements were also made to level crossing signals.
Mark Goodall from Network Rail apologized for any disruptions caused by the upgrades.
He said the upgrades benefit riders with smoother and more reliable journeys. Level crossing upgrades increase safety, helping passengers, drivers, and walkers. The bridge’s new material reduces future closures.
He thanked people for their patience and expressed hope that they understand the improvements’ worth.
