Loraine White, 72, receives £95k payout after a moped accident on a zebra crossing left her with lasting injuries.

The accident occurred in March 2022 when she walked to meet her sons for a Mother’s Day lunch. A scooter struck the 72-year-old gran, breaking her tibia and a rib, and causing facial injuries. She says each day feels like “hell,” almost three years later.
The accused man denied driving the scooter and was later acquitted at trial, even though the scooter was a Yamaha 125. Her lawyers secured a £95,000 payout from the man’s insurers because she suffered life-changing injuries.
The accident happened on March 24, 2022, as she walked to the bus stop, taking a shortcut. A white car stopped for her, and she looked left and right while crossing, but then she was on the floor, not realizing a hit happened.
Her left hand nails all broke, and she felt enormous pain soon after with difficult breathing. She had no time to react at the zebra crossing. She tried to move but felt sharp pain.
Neighbors helped Ms. White, and police officers arrived at the scene but left for another crash. She waited an hour in the road, and a mobile paramedic treated her there. No ambulances were available that day, so she took a taxi to the hospital.
The next day she had surgery where doctors put a plate and screws in her leg, repairing her fractured tibia. She stayed in the hospital for two and a half weeks and was bed-bound during the recovery.
Returning home, her pain was “horrendous,” and her twin sons, Sammy and Daniel, helped her with “everything.” The 34-year-olds were relied on for her care, and Ms. White felt degraded by this experience.
She used a zimmer frame inside because she couldn’t do anything herself. Ms. White felt helpless, like a child. She felt hopeful about a prosecution in 2022, but the court acquitted the man at the trial, which was very disappointing for her.
Her lawyer, Rachel Flannigan, helped sue the man’s insurers. The injury claim secured £95,000 initially, but after legal fees, she got £55,000. She says the money isn’t enough because she still has trouble with stairs and walking. Metal in her legs sets off alarms, making people think she’s a shoplifter, and she wants a walk-in shower installed, but the council is taking its time.
“This has ruined my retirement,” she said. “I’m in constant pain from it.”
Her lawyer stated drivers must be aware and look out for pedestrians because crossings can be dangerous otherwise. Her life changed in seconds when she only went out for a meal, and now she faces a lifetime of pain.
