Police arrested 244 people for suspected domestic abuse in January. Men comprised 207 of those arrested. The youngest man was 17; the oldest was 77.
The arrest numbers stayed consistent from December. December’s figure mirrored January’s count of 244. Over half the January arrests involved physical assault. The assaults targeted partners, ex-partners, or family.
Out of 124 assault arrests, 51 involved actual bodily harm. Four arrests were for grievous bodily harm. Sixty-eight arrests fell under common assault. One arrest involved wounding.
Some arrests paint a grim picture. One man allegedly hit his partner with a shoe. Another strangled his partner, using control for years. One man threw, punched, and kicked his partner. He also threatened to harm the family dog.
Four men faced arrest for alleged rape. One man was arrested for attempted rape. Seventeen people breached bail, court orders, or injunctions.
Nineteen men were arrested for stalking with fear of violence. This includes fixated, unwanted, and repeated actions. One ex-partner sent threats. Another banged on her door uninvited. One called and showed up repeatedly against her wishes.
January saw 208 men arrested in total. That is an average of six men arrested each day. Thirty-six women were arrested during January. Twenty-nine of those women were suspected of assault.
One woman allegedly pushed and punched her partner. This occurred in front of their child. Another woman sent her partner threatening messages. She threatened to burn down their home.
Another woman hit her partner in the face. She threw a can, causing injury. One woman menaced her mum with a knife. One woman violated bail; two women faced harassment charges.
Domestic abuse includes physical, sexual, or violent behavior. It also includes control, coercion, and digital or emotional abuse.
