The UK’s first global LGBTQ+ summit, #SaferToBeMe, could inject over £1 million into the North East economy.

It might bring £250,000 to the regional economy. The summit could also create £1 million in publicity. ReportOUT, a human rights group, is organizing it, assisted by local groups like Pride Action North, OUT North East, and local businesses.
The event includes talks, exhibits, and a conference. These will address setbacks in LGBTQ+ rights globally.
Drew Dalton chairs ReportOUT and chose the North East for #SaferToBeMe. He wants to showcase the region’s friendliness and feels the North East should shine, not London.
He wants to show off the North East to the world. Drew hopes the event will raise Newcastle’s profile, known as an inclusive city. He grew up in the area and sees how accepting the region has become.
The North East is a great place, he feels, and this summit helps put it on the map. The summit’s aim is crucial, as many worry about LGBTQ+ rights declining. At the end, groups will sign a Global Compact uniting them in support.
Drew is worried about current global trends. He explains that some leaders harm LGBTQ+ rights. He notes issues in Russia, the USA, and China. Eastern Europe also sees rising anti-LGBTQ+ feelings. People are still attacked for their sexuality and gender. The world seems darker now, he says, making #SaferToBeMe urgently needed.
