A gas engineer left two children without proper heating, leaving the family without hot water for five months. Shazad Ali hired Matthew Henvey, who runs Glasgow Gas Services, to install a boiler. The installation, which occurred last September, cost Ali £1,640.

The boiler suffered from electrical issues and a faulty flue, eventually breaking down and being condemned by officials. This left Ali’s sons cold and without washing facilities. Tragically, one son is disabled, and the other requires a kidney transplant.

Ali found Henvey online. He said Henvey did a poor job with the boiler. Pipes were dented and wires were exposed, and an old valve was not replaced. The flue was loose and angled incorrectly, raising concerns about a potential gas leak.

Ali’s youngest son suffers from epidermolysis bullosa, a skin condition that causes blisters, making the winter particularly harsh. Hot water was essential for managing his son’s skin condition, and Ali worried constantly about his family’s safety.

Gas Safe instructed Henvey to rectify the faulty installation, but Ali claims that Henvey worsened the situation. Ali also faces a £1,600 roof repair bill because the roof was damaged during the re-attempted fix.

Henvey seemingly exacerbated the problems upon his return. The boiler settings were incorrect, displaying units in Fahrenheit instead of Celsius. He damaged the roof while attempting to fix the flue, and subsequently blocked Ali, making him unreachable.

Gas Safe identified 19 defects in a report, classifying three as “at risk.” The remaining issues were deemed substandard or in violation of regulations. Ali fears Henvey’s errors could be fatal and is demanding Henvey’s removal from the profession.

Henvey denies the claims, stating that Ali sought a refund. Henvey claims they replaced a part for free and alleges that Ali intentionally broke parts. He asserts that the case is closed while Gas Safe cannot comment due to the ongoing investigation.
