Glasgow Crime Rate Highest in Scotland According to Government Report

Glasgow has the highest crime rate in Scotland. The Scottish Government released a new report. This report covered crime stats ending in December 2024. These stats are divided by crime type and area.

Glasgow is the most dangerous area now, with a crime rate of 830 per 10,000 people, compared to the country-wide average of 543. Glasgow reported 52,475 crimes last year. This is a four percent rise from the prior year.

Over 12,000 violent crimes happened, including murder and serious assault. Police recorded about 19,000 dishonest crimes, which included theft and fraud. They also reported 2,223 sexual crimes.

Dundee ranks second most dangerous, with a crime rate of 775 per 10,000 people. Dundee had 11,655 reported crimes; that’s an eleven percent drop from last year.

Dundee included 2,760 violent crimes and 4,808 dishonest crimes. Sexual crimes numbered 466 in Dundee, while crimes against society totaled 1,914. These included weapon and drug offenses.

Edinburgh is third on the list; their rate sits at 718 per 10,000. Edinburgh reported 37,590 crimes in 2024. Rounding out the top five are West Dunbartonshire and Aberdeen.

West Dunbartonshire’s rate is 658 per 10,000. Aberdeen recorded a rate of 627. Remember that police-recorded crimes aren’t all crimes; not all crimes get reported to the police.

Here are Scotland’s top ten areas for crime rate: Glasgow tops the list at 830, Dundee is next at 775, and Edinburgh follows with 718. West Dunbartonshire has 658, Aberdeen shows 627, North Ayrshire reported 578, North Lanarkshire reached 567, East Ayrshire’s rate is 546, West Lothian is at 541, and lastly, Dumfries and Galloway had 531.
