War memorial plaques, rescued from a skip, were unveiled at a Gateshead Family Hub, honouring local war heroes.

Gateshead’s Mayor unveiled them at a ceremony on February 7, where a choir from Carr Hill School performed. They honored heroes who died in wars.
The plaques list CIU High Fell Club members, from the club that was previously on Old Durham Road. These members served in both World Wars.
Someone found the plaques in a skip before giving them to Thomas Miller Auctioneers. The auctioneers then donated them to Gateshead Council.
The North East War Memorials Project helped, agreeing that the hub was a good place. It allows people to see the plaques and honor the fallen.
Councillor Stuart Green spoke about brave local men, saying we must remember them always. He noted the memorials were almost lost forever.
Mayor Kath McCartney said it was an honor to unveil the plaques. She thanked the school choir, the volunteers, and the person who found them.
Jean Atkinson volunteers with the project. She said they searched for the plaques for years, as the CIU Club got demolished a decade ago.
The council hopes the finder comes forward so they can thank this person. The hub helps kids learn about the history, making it a fitting location.
