Gateshead Council seeks feedback on a Covid-19 memorial in Saltwell Park, honoring the dead and key workers achievements.

The proposal involves a ring-shaped sculpture. Its location would be in Saltwell Park. This commemorates those who died and essential workers. This consultation comes before a lockdown anniversary.
Council data shows many local Covid deaths. Eight hundred seven people died from 2020-2023. The council thinks Saltwell Park suits the memorial. It offers a peaceful place for quiet reflection.
Councilor Angela Douglas commented on the memorial. She recognizes the impact of Covid-19. She also acknowledges frontline services’ brave actions. She hopes the memorial offers a place to reflect. This location recognizes loss, sacrifice, and support during the pandemic.
The council asks for consultation by March 4. Last February, plans for a sculpture went to the council. The ring uses steel pieces. It is 1.75m tall. Costs ranged from £12,000 to £14,000. Joseph Hillier will design the artwork.
