Galway gets the go-ahead for train station upgrades including a new platform, loop, & better access after a long review.

The project includes a passing loop that measures 820 meters and a new 185.5-meter platform, which will be at least four meters deep. A new path links to a walking/cycling route. The loop needs a new rail buffer.
Crews will upgrade signals and move existing ones. A new underpass is planned for walkers and cyclists, and they will also improve the current underpass. A new ramp and lift will be wheelchair accessible.
Galway City Council also had to approve this project because part of the loop falls under city council control. They approved it with conditions. The date of official approval was February 17, 2025.
Working hours face limits as part of those conditions. The project must control water runoff and dust. All work must follow the September 2024 plan. The County Council must approve any changes.
Irish Rail must handle demolition work with care, managing materials and dust with caution. A landscaping architect also needs appointment, and they must approve the landscape plan in advance.
The plan must reduce impacts to cultural heritage and enforce environmental protection measures. The Department of Housing partly funds this project, and the Department of Transport also provides funds.
The platform will be north of the existing one. People will access it via the new underpass, which includes a path to the north area.
The relocation of signals will happen soon, meaning the lighter works start within weeks. Major construction is expected to begin in Autumn 2025.
The former Minister for Transport spoke about it last September. Eamon Ryan said the plan will offer a better train service and that the people of Oranmore and Galway will benefit. He added that the Garraun area will have a frequent transport link.
Jim Meade (Iarnród Éireann) said they work to boost rail services. The Oranmore upgrade will allow more services. He also mentioned the Galway station expansion.
