Key Romford flyover to be upgraded, restoring HGV access and raising speed limit. Work aims to ease traffic and extend lifespan by 60 years.

The road needs constant maintenance, leading to frequent closures and disruptions. This situation creates problems at the roundabout underneath, impacting local services such as SEND transport and rubbish collection. The Havering Council will collaborate to mitigate potential issues during the upgrade process.
TfL plans a major flyover upgrade this summer to address these issues. They will strengthen and fix the flyover, enabling HGVs to use it again. The speed limit will increase to 30 mph, and HGVs will no longer need the roundabout below, easing traffic congestion in the area.
The flyover’s lifespan will extend by 60 years, reducing the need for regular repairs and closures. In addition, TfL will change the roundabout’s lane design to improve traffic flow and safety.
The project will require flyover and road closures during the summer months. This timing takes advantage of lower traffic levels, minimizing the impact on commuters and residents.
Councillor Mugglestone said they lobbied for these upgrades and is pleased the flyover will be refurbished. While acknowledging that closures will cause major road issues, he emphasized that Gallows Corner is a vital route for many. Completed works should improve travel times.
He hopes there won’t be major work delays, which could cause chaos in the borough. They will work closely with TfL to ensure timely completion and minimize the impact on residents.
Enabling works start from March 10 and include lane closures on the roundabout. For questions or concerns, contact TfL. More project details are available on the TfL website.
