People are remembering Barrie Jackson. He was a Nottingham city councillor. Barrie, known as ‘Jacko,’ died January 21. He was 85 years old and passed at home.

Barrie was a councillor from 1991 to 2003. He represented the Portland ward, later Basford. He worked various jobs before entering politics. These included starting as a butcher, serving in the Army and Royal Navy, and working as a mechanic after 1972.

Barrie married Ann in October 1995. He proposed only three weeks after they met. Ann said people still sought his help even after he left the council because Barrie always helped them.

He was a governor at three schools and served on many council committees. He considered the people during difficult decisions. Weekends meant trips with grandchildren to Nottingham places and fetes, and he also went to St Aiden’s Church.

Barrie enjoyed volunteering as Santa at Christmas at Woodthorpe Park and other places. He read books and newspapers daily and took an Open University course at 72. He discovered he was dyslexic, yet earned a BA.

Barrie was known as a councillor and school governor. He was transportation committee vice-chair. In 2006, he became an honorary alderman, recognizing his years of service.

David Mellen spoke at a council meeting. He remembered Barrie’s ongoing community support. Barrie aided the Labour Party with his wife Ann and quietly served the people well, never seeking personal fame.

Ann thanked medical staff who helped, including Churchfield Medical Centre, nurses, Evergreen Chemist, and Nottz Care. Barrie had three children and nine grandchildren. His funeral is March 7 at Bramcote Crematorium, and donations to the Royal British Legion are welcome.
