A former police chief in Scotland passed away. Ian Latimer was 68. He died at his home in Beauly on Wednesday, February 12th.

Ian Latimer used to lead Northern Constabulary, holding that role from 2001 until 2011. He also worked with Merseyside Police and served with Devon and Cornwall Constabulary. His wife, Margaret, survives him, as do his three children: Matthew, Jonathan, and Daniel, and his daughter-in-law, Niamh.

Ian’s funeral will be on Friday, February 28th, with the service starting at 2 PM. It will take place at William T Fraser and Son funeral home, located at Culdethel Road, Inverness. In 2006, Ian received the Queen’s Police Medal.

Jo Farrell is the current Chief Constable. She spoke about Ian Latimer, saying people saw him as a strong Highland advocate; many liked, respected, and admired him. He supported coworkers and partner groups, and Police Scotland sends thoughts to his family.

A case marked Ian’s career. It involved Renee MacRae and her son, Andrew, who disappeared in November 1976, when Andrew was only three years old.

In 2004, Ian approved a search at Dalmagarry quarry, near where Renee’s car was found burned. Sadly, they did not find their bodies.

Police sent a report to the fiscal, naming a suspect in the case. However, in 2006, the Crown Office did not prosecute due to a lack of enough evidence to go to court.
