Sweet Elohim Afro Market in Wolverhampton fined after a public complaint revealed a significant rat infestation.

Someone reported concerns to the Wolverhampton Council. Health officers checked the store. They discovered a big rat problem. Rat poop was all over the place. It was even near open food and packed goods.
The officers shut the market down fast. They only let it reopen when it became safe. Georgina Konadu runs Sweet Elohim Afro Market. She admitted to breaking food safety rules in court.
The business also pleaded guilty to the charges. The court fined the business £2,680. They also had to pay a surcharge of £1,072, plus covered £4,584 in legal costs.
Konadu got fined £1,000 personally. She had a £400 surcharge to pay. Her legal costs reached £1,500. These offenses happened back in November 2023.
A council member spoke about the event. Residents should trust places selling food. The market’s rat problem risked customer sickness. They closed it until it was safe. They take public safety very seriously.
